Greendale Construction completes ‘on time’ a major refurbishment of the first specialist NHS unit in the South West treating post natal depression.

Florence House in Bournemouth provides a vital service for women suffering from serious mental illness following child birth. The statistics are staggering – more than 10% of new mothers suffer an episode of depression. Whilst most Mums can be helped in the community, some need to be inpatients and Dorset Healthcare Trust’s specialist facility in Florence House means they can receive dedicated support and treatment without interrupting the bonding process with their babies.

Greendale’s task was to bring Florence House, which is a listed building and part of Herbert Hospital, into the 21st century. The £250,000 pound contract awarded by Dorset HealthCare NHS Trust demanded a “sympathetic” refurbishment with Greendale working closely with the architect and the local authority.

Director Chris Kane says: “We have an enviable reputation for completing successful contracts in the demanding Health sector. We are currently working closely with the NHS Trust at Royal Bournemouth Hospital to deliver an improved and enhanced Pre-Assessment Unit. Greendale understands the conflicting needs of getting the job done on time without interfering with day to day treatment of patients.”

The award winning Poole based construction company provided new mechanical and electrical installations at Florence House, including a lift, as well as upgrading the five mother and baby units to make new Mums feel more “at home”

“We are proud to have been chosen to refurbish what is regarded as a centre of excellence in the field of treating the worst cases of post natal depression”
says Chris “I believe we have played our part in creating the right environment at Florence House, enabling new Mums to recover as quickly as possible and return home to continue bonding with their babies.”

Sweet Success - Local man releases single into the charts

Local musician Alec James is raising money for charity with the launch of his new single, Margarita, which he hopes to get into the Top 40 chart.

Alec, who was born in Bournemouth, is hoping to get his single ‘Margarita’ into the Top 40 chart in order to raise money for Forest Holme Hospice and Margaret Green Animal Rescue, both of which are local charities that lie close to Alec’s heart. The single is available to buy on ssunes, and his album, ‘Better than a Day Job’ is available for purchase through his website, www.alecjamesmusic.com.

‘Margarita’ is a feel-good song that is perfect for the summer months; its uplifting beats and positive lyrics will have you smiling in no time. With all profits going to Dorset charities, there’s nothing sweeter than buying ‘Margarita’ and helping out the local community.

Alec has plenty of experience in the Dorset music industry, having joined his first band, ‘The Corvettes’ as a drummer at the age of 15. The line-up changed a few years later and became the ‘Palmer James Group’; the band were one of the mainstays of the blues and soul movement on the south coast. Alec went on to work as a musician in several line-ups, and eventually his concentration turned to singing.

Alec has played many charity gigs, and occasionally sings with the ‘Frome Swing Band’. In the last year, Alec has concentrated on songwriting and recording his second album, ‘Better than a Day Job’, which has just been released on the independent record label, Faustuss International.

Alec said ‘I think it’d be great to have a local guy in the charts; I really enjoyed writing Margarita and if we can raise lots of cash for my charities that will be a bonus. So a big thank you in advance to anyone who buys a copy”.

The single is available to buy now on itunes for only 79p. Please visit Alec’s website www.alecjamesmusic.com for more information.

GREENDALE CONSTRUCTION COMPLETES THE NEW WING EXTENSION TO JULIA’S HOUSE

Greendale Construction have handed over the newly completed ‘Wing’ – a new extension building at Julia’s House which includes the Mermaid suite, a private area consisting of a child’s bedroom, an en suite room for family members and a courtyard garden for families.

This enables the charity to offer parents the option of spending the final few days with their child in a peaceful, non-clinical, and familiar setting rather than a hospital, with  round the clock care, giving vital end-of-life care and support to Dorset children and their families within the hospice. When the rooms are not being used for end-of-life care, the space can be used for complementary therapies and bereavement support for family members.

The Corfe Mullen, Dorset based hospice was unveiled by celebrity patrons Martin Clunes, Liz Yelling and Chris Jarvis as well as other guests of honour who funded the extension building and valued Julia’s House supporters and trustees, without whom the hospice extension building would not be possible.

Julia’s House is Dorset’s only hospice dedicated to caring for nearly 100 children with life-limited conditions, who are unlikely to live beyond the age of 18. It is estimated around 215 Dorset children and their families are eligible for the unique service it provides.

Greendale Director Chris Kane states, “The Greendale team were proud to be chosen to work at Julia’s House once again. The newly completed Wing and Mermaid Suite are a superb addition and will give round the clock support to families with the end of life care.”

In a time where many local businesses are tentative about additional spending, Poole-based Affinity Care Homes, together with the acclaimed south east based training company, Training The Carer, bucked the trend by inviting their clients and associates to join them in watching the world-renowned British SandPolo Championships.

On Friday July 9th over 50 employees, clients and invited guests enjoyed the hospitality of both companies. The event, which was a runaway success, was hosted in order to engage with the businesses’ clients and those who work with their several care homes across Dorset, Hampshire and Surrey.

It’s Snow for Christmas at Lewis-Manning Hospice

Lewis-Manning Hospice is inviting individuals and companies to book tables for their annual Snow Ball, which will this year be taking place on Friday 10 December in the luxurious surroundings of Compton Acres’ Italian Villa. The event, which will raise money for the Hospice, promises to be more prestigious than ever before, including a five-course menu, entertainment by renowned local magician, Kasrani, and music provided by the UK’s no. 1 Sinatra Tribute, Anthony Adams, who recently cam a close 2nd place on the BBC’s ‘The One and Only’ reality TV show.

Local marketing specialist, Callisto Communications, is responsible for organising the event. Simon Harrison, Managing Director at Callisto, said, “the Lewis-Manning Snow Ball will be the most glamorous event of the year and the perfect opportunity for companies to show their appreciation to staff at Christmas time and entertain prospective clients. It is also a great chance to network amongst other professionals and raise your business profile whilst supporting a local charity.”

Lewis-Manning Hospice provides free palliative nursing care to over 650 local people living with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. The Hospice receives just a third of its funding from the NHS Bournemouth and Poole and therefore relies heavily upon the support of the local community and fundraising for the remainder. All proceeds from the Snow Ball will go towards the Hospice’s Time to Care Appeal, which aims to raise £2.5 million to build a new state of the art 15-bedded unit at the Hospice’s current location.

Tickets to this exclusive event are on sale now for just £75 per person, or £750 per table of 10. A special ‘Early Bird’ discount of 15% is available until 31 September for full table bookings. To avoid disappointment early booking is suggested as the Hospice expects tables to sell out quickly.

O is for Organic - New organic, personalised baby range

Dorset-based babywear company, Meenymineymo, has recently developed a new range of organic, personalised baby clothing, accessories and toys for children aged from birth to five years old.

Meenymineymo uses 100% organic cotton jersey and provides parents with personalised items for their little ones; from romper suits and t-shirts to laundry bags and blankets.

Michelle Jeffreys, Founder and Designer of Meenymineymo, saw a gap in the marketplace for funky and imaginative baby clothing that uses 100% organic cotton.  She commented; “I found that many other suppliers of organic baby clothes use boring and mundane materials.  I’ve created a range that is bright, bold and can be personalised with baby’s name.

I decided early on to only use gorgeously soft, 100% organic cotton jersey after seeing how the use of chemicals in cotton farming harmed so many people, especially the women and children who work in the fields.”

Michelle commented; “The first written word that my 3 year old son recognised was his own name which prompted me to start a collection of all things Lucas. I loved seeing him swell with a sense of pride when he could see that Lucas shape again on something that he liked to play with, look at or wear. Children love to take ownership. One of my son’s first words was “mine”, and so Meenymineymo was born.”

WEAR YELLOW!

Lewis-Manning Hospice, supported by Transdev Yellow Buses, invites you to take part in “Wear Yellow Day” on 25 June. June is National Hospice Awareness Month, dedicated to recognising the work of palliative care workers, carers, and also raising the awareness of the entire hospice movement. Lewis-Manning, Poole’s local voluntary hospice, is therefore inviting businesses, schools, colleges, playgroups and supporters to join with them in dressing from head to toe in sunshine yellow and making a suggested donation of £1 per person to the hospice.

If 25 June doesn't suit you, but yellow does, pick another day! National Hospice Awareness is for the whole month, so any day during the month would be perfect for you to don your loudest and brightest yellow clothes. You might want to wear just one item of yellow clothing, or simply accessorise with yellow - a tie, scarf or sunflower pin badge? Or you might want to go all out and dress up in yellow fancy dress and paint your face - or perhaps you could sponsor your boss to wear a yellow wig? The possibilities are endless.

THE BUTTERFLY FOUNDATION “OPENING NEW DOORS” CONFERENCE: WEDS 7 JULY 2010, 9am -4.45pm at the Durley Dean Hotel.

The Butterfly Foundation, a local Bournemouth Charity working with survivors of domestic violence/abuse will be holding their first conference, entitled “Opening New Doors” on Weds 7 July 2010 at the Durley Dean Hotel.

The aims of this event are to bring together a partnership of statutory and third sector organisations to address the ‘End Violence Against Women and Girls’ Strategy (VAWG) and to raise awareness of domestic violence as a local priority.  To identify key areas of change and how we can work together to improve services and the quality of support offered to families who have suffered domestic violence and abuse.  We hope to encourage a cultural shift of attitudes towards victims.

We are delighted that the Conference will be opened by the new Mayor of Bournemouth, Councillor Barry Goldbart.  The Butterfly Foundation will give an address on a new workshop on Family Relationships being delivered in schools in partnership with local charity Vita Nova.

We are fortunate that the key note address will be delivered  by Davinia James Hanman, Director of the National Charity AVA (Against Violence and Abuse)  and advisor to the Home Office.  DS John Merrick and Lisa Dowry will give a presentation on public protection and the domestic violence IDVA teams, including a case study.

The conference has been identified through the needs of Butterfly members, the  Women’s Aid Charity and supported by the WNC Consultation.  The VAWG strategy is due to be implemented in 2011 and the conference will discuss how Bournemouth and Poole can begin to work locally to support this.

This conference is the first for The Butterfly Foundation and we hope that following this, a forum/steering group can be put in place to move the issues forward and contribute towards positive change for families suffering from domestic violence.

The Butterfly Foundation along with local Charity, Vita Nova has devised a collaborative drama piece, to be performed on the day, entitled, “I’ll do anything for love…”  The performance follows the journey of a how a woman finds herself in a domestic violence relationship, how she gets addicted to alcohol and ends up in court on drug charges.  The day will involve a series of workshops to discuss the areas for change to intervene or improve the outcomes for this young woman.  The afternoon session will explore these outcomes through forum theatre with a positive story of empowerment by a Butterfly member.

The ticket price for the conference is £55 and you can book through office@thebutterflyfoundation.org.uk

For further information, please contact Julie Johns, Creative Director, Tel: 01202 463016 and please visit website and follow links to latest news page: www.thebutterflyfoundation.org.uk

Can you spare some space?

Lewis-Manning Hospice is looking for somewhere to sort stock for its 7 charity shops. Rob Matthews, Retail Manager, said “Thanks to the generosity of the local community, the shops are doing really well and bursting at the seams with stock but we have nowhere to sort it, which is really affecting our ability to bring in much needed funds for the hospice.” The hospice is therefore appealing to the public to help and asking local people to spare some sorting and storage space, such as an empty garage or disused store.

Elizabeth Purcell, Chief Executive, said, “After receiving the contracted funding from the NHS, the monthly running costs of the hospice exceed £50,000, for which we rely heavily upon the support of the local community and fundraising initiatives, which is why it is so vital that our shops operate effectively.”

The specialist palliative nursing care offered at Lewis-Manning Hospice is completely FREE of charge to patients and their carers. Lewis-Manning Hospice cares for over 650 local people each year.

If you have space to offer the hospice, contact fundraising on 01202 701000.

The yellow ribbons will be hung in the hospice garden throughout the month both as a symbolic way to remember loved ones and also to raise awareness about the services Lewis-Manning Hospice provides for local people.

Totally Barking Mad - Barking Mad has innovative offer for Facebook fans

Poole-based Barking Mad has recycled an innovative pricing idea from the catering industry. The marketing company invited fans of their Facebook page to use them for design, marketing or PR, but to only pay what they think it's worth once the work is complete.

The offer certainly appealed to the company's fans, and as the offer was limited to the first five people, uptake was rapid. Within a few hours five local businesses had contacted Barking Mad to secure their projects. One business that took up the offer is educational film makers, Kerby Thomas. Andy Kerby, Co-Director of the company, commented; "We'd been considering getting new business cards designed for a few weeks, so when we saw this offer we jumped at the chance."

Barking Mad has been running off the leash since it started in March this year. With an ever-expanding client base the company is anticipating a fruitful few months. Company Director Ellie Barker commented; "I've been very fortunate with Barking Mad, since I started the company two months ago, word of mouth has been my main form of gaining new clients and promoting our crazy offers. We've got a lot more exciting offers up our sleeves for the next few months, so keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter pages to be the first in the know!"

Barking Mad offers a bridge between DIY marketing and full-commitment marketing. Boasting a slogan of "marketing for commitmentphobes" the company provides an ad-hoc marketing and design service for businesses that have a short term need.

An early start for Santa - Increase in the number of adventurous hen and stag parties across the UK

Wiltshire-based company GoBallooning, recently took to the skies with 30 Santas. The stags from Chippenham, all dressed as Father Christmas were up, up and away on their journey with GoBallooning.

Gone are the days when husbands-to-be go for a few quiet drinks in the local pub the day before their wedding.  There has been a distinct increase in the last 12 months of hens and stags jetting abroad or organising fantastic and adrenaline-fuelled experience days to celebrate their last few ‘days of freedom’.

Neil Willis of GoBallooning commented; “We’ve seen a distinct increase in the number of stag party enquiries here at GoBallooning.  It seems that they all want to do something to remember and something which will give them a much-needed adrenalin rush before their wedding!  With all the disruptions to the airways from the recent ash clouds, we’ve received a record number of phone calls from expectant grooms and hens wishing to hit the skies as a result of being let down by their travel companies.”

For more information on GoBallooning experiences please call 0845 337 1566 or visit www.goballooning.co.uk.

DANCE, DANCE, DANCE-A-THON!!

A whole weekend of non-stop dance at the Dolphin Shopping Centre, Poole – and you and your friends or dance troop can be part of it!  On Saturday 26 June – Sunday 27 June, Lewis-Manning Hospice is holding a sponsored ‘Dance-A-Thon’ in aid of patients living with life-threatening illnesses, such as cancer and motor neurone disease.

The hospice, which offers free palliative care to over 650 local people each year, is inviting dance schools, leisure centres, local schools and other groups to perform for half an hour in the popular and busy venue in Poole.

Maria Tidy, Fundraising Manager, said, “The dance-a-thon is a great opportunity for schools and groups to raise their profiles in the local community whilst also supporting a local charity.”

The event is open to groups of up to 10 dancers (any genre, any age) who have solo, duet, group dances or anything else ready to perform. Each dancer and group will be given a sponsorship form and encouraged to raise as much money as possible for the hospice – all of which will go towards the comfort and care of the patients at the hospice.

Lewis-Manning Hospice does not charge patients for its services, although its monthly running costs exceed £50,000 even after receipt of the contractual funding from the NHS. Therefore the hospice relies on the support of the local community and fundraising initiatives keep it going.

The registration fee for the dance-a-thon is £2 per dancer. For more information and how to register, contact the fundraising team on 01202 701000.

ALL IN A FLAP!

To celebrate the end of an era and the coming of a new one Lewis-Manning Hospice is holding a “Bring the House Down 1920’s style ‘Flapper’ Party”. On Saturday 12 June, all are invited to say a fond farewell to the current Lewis-Manning House before it is brought down to make way for an all new purpose built hospice.

Lewis-Manning Hospice was originally built in the 1920’s, so rebuild party celebrations are going to take guests back to the period, with music to Charleston to from Swing Unlimited Big Band and a 20’s style ‘flapper fashion’ dress code. Guests are invited to bring a picnic and drinks to enjoy in the beautiful surrounds of the house gardens with its stunning views across Poole Bay, Brownsea Island and the Purbecks.

Go-far Returns!

Holton Lee’s all terrain vehicle, the ‘GO-FAR’, has been out of action for some time, but thanks to the students and staff of the Motor Engineering Department of Weymouth College, the vehicle has been returned to Holton Lee in full working order, and is available again for visitors to use to explore the 350 acre Holton Lee estate.

The Go-far was manufactured in only small number, but designed specifically for disabled people to drive solo across the countryside. Its design features make it an easy vehicle for many users as it has very simple hand controls. There are no foot pedals, while a sliding seat enables easy movement from wheelchair into the vehicle.

Tim Gray, lecturer in Motor Engineering at Weymouth College who led the restoration project says the project is ideally suited to teaching students the basics of the drive and steering mechanisms featured in the ‘GO-FAR’.

With the Go-far now mechanically restored, as well as being available for visitors to use, will also be on display during the charity’s Summer Fair on 5th June at Holton Lee.

The Director of Holton Lee, Theresa Veith is seen in the photo, together with Tim Gray, lecturer, and George Morrice, a volunteer at Holton Lee, who initiated the restoration project.

Holton Lee Director Theresa Veith said ‘We are enormously grateful to the college and students for their time and expertise, so readily given, in bringing this vehicle back into use. It will give immense freedom and enjoyment to many of our guests over the coming Spring and Summer months!”

Morrisons goes ‘YELLOW’ for Lewis-Manning Hospice as stores across the country set out to raise £1m for hospice care

This week Morrisons of Verwood will be pulling out all the stops to raise a smile and vital funding for Lewis-Manning Hospice as part of a UK-wide campaign by the supermarket chain to raise £1 million for hospice care.

Through its new partnership with Help the Hospices, the leading charity supporting hospice care throughout the UK, every Morrisons store has teamed up with a local hospice to raise money that will directly fund hospice services in the local community.

To get the 10 month partnership off to a bright start, Morrisons Verwood will be ‘Going Yellow to Raise a Smile for Help the Hospices’ through a range of fun and exciting yellow-themed fundraising activities for colleagues and customers.
Angus Maciver, Group Marketing and Communications Director, Morrisons, said; “Each year we ask our colleagues to nominate a charity that we will help ‘Raise a Smile’, and for 2010, we are really pleased that Help the Hospices was the resounding choice.  Local hospices do great work at the heart of the communities that many of our stores operate in and we look forward to raising some vital funds to support such a great cause.

Louise Trott, Community Fundraiser for Lewis-Manning Hospice said; “Nurses are vital to the specialist palliative nursing care and support given to over 650 local patients who attend Lewis-Manning Hospice each year. On average, it costs us £50,000 per month to provide this crucial care, and the money raised by Morrisons will make a huge difference to the services our nurses are able to provide.”
“We officially launched the partnership with Morrisons Verwood at 10am on Wednesday 19 May, by dropping the first pound of the campaign into the collection buckets, as did Morrisons stores nationwide, which we hope will get the fundraising off to an excellent start to hit the £1million target.”

Langtry Women in Business Awards

The inaugural Langtry Manor Business Woman of the Year Awards took place at the Langtry Manor with a black tie dinner on Thursday 13th May 2010.

The event was a sell out success with an electric atmosphere, as well as tears, laughter and much applause for all the deserving winners as well as the runners up on the shortlist.

Tara Howard said of the awards, “It’s hard to believe that it was less than seven months ago that Jackie Phillipson from PPR and I chatted over the idea of honouring high achieving women in business. My team and I are absolutely honoured to host the awards – with such a monumental first awards ceremony. From this little acorn of an idea much has already been achieved and talk has already started about a 2011 awards.”

Two leading ladies in business who sadly passed away earlier this year, the late Stephanie Penrose from ISS TV and the late Sarah Howells from The Passionate PA were both honoured for contribution to business in the Dorset community. Stephanie was honoured by Jackie Phillipson, PPR Media Solutions – who presented the PR Initiative Award in her honour to Jacqui Cleaver and Sunny Moran of ‘New You Boot Camp’ and Sarah by Frances Miles and Tracey Wood from The Women’s Network Club who presented the Special Woman Award to Nikila Newman of The Infectious Academy.

Whilst the business women themselves may not have entered personally a large number of entries were sent in on their behalf. When it came to votes for the entries the community really entered into the voting spirit. Jackie Phillipson from PPR said, “The voting process was without a doubt a massive success, The Daily Echo received 10,000 votes for The Business Mum of the Year and Heart received 1800 votes for the Employer of the Year – confirming this as the most votes ever received from a competition since they opened in the area.

Having a Ball - Charity Police Ball

The annual police ball, held at The Crown Hotel in Blandford, was a phenomenal success and raised over £1,300 for local child, Alfie O’Neil.

Two-year-old Alfie suffers from cerebral palsy and is unable to crawl or walk.  The NHS is unable to fund much needed physiotherapy for the tot, so his family travels to Bedfordshire twice a week to seek private medical advice and care.

He has made incredible progress at the centre over the past 12 months and, with the continued help and support from others, he may one day be able to walk unaided.  The money raised from the ball will go towards travel expenses, care and physiotherapy at the centre in Bedfordshire.

Guests at the ball on Saturday 8th May were entertained by a disco, delicious food, a silent auction and a grand prize draw with fantastic prizes, including a golf day, a chocolate hamper and Champagne.

The next fundraising event is a charity golf and fun day at Rushmore Golf Club on 20th August from 8.30am until 6pm.  Half of the money raised will go towards caring for Alfie, the other half will go towards The Blandford Opportunities Group, a charity which helps children with special needs in Blandford and the surrounding area which Alfie regularly attends.  To book your place at the charity golf day please contact Darren on 07979508292. Tickets cost £40 per person and include a bacon sandwich on arrival, a round of golf, lunch and competitions.

Sewards of Blandford has donated a brand new Vauxhall Corsa for anyone who achieves a hole in one on the day.

FRIENDS OF FOREST HOLME TO RECEIVE COMMUNITY CHEST DONATION FOLLOWING VOTE BY SANTANDER CUSTOMERS IN POOLE & WINTON

Friends of Forest Holme has received a share of the Santander £250,000 Community Chest after local customers named it as their favourite local charity in a vote that ran in the Poole and Winton branches throughout January and February.

To celebrate the rebrand of Abbey and Bradford and Bingley to Santander, the bank launched its Community Chest programme and asked its UK customers to decide which local charity was to benefit in their area. The aim was to strengthen relationships in the communities in which Santander branches are located and to help raise the profile of the charitable organisations making a difference in their area.

Christianne Carrick, Community Relations Manager at Santander says of the scheme:  “We are absolutely delighted that our customers have worked with us to recognise the incredible work that Friends of Forest Holme is doing to support hospice and palliative care in Poole.

“We hope that the Community Chest has raised the profile of local charities as it united communities in voting for the charity of their choice”

Debra Dennett from Friends of Forest Holme commented: “We are extremely grateful to the customers of Santander for choosing Friends of Forest Holme. Their support helps to make a real difference and enhances the care we give to our patients and their families.”

Allenbrook Nursing Home celebrates its sixth 100th Birthday!

Staff and residents at Allenbrook Nursing Home in Fordingbridge, Hampshire recently helped to celebrate the 102nd birthday of resident Nellie Tiller.  Although this was clearly a special occasion, it was made even more so by the fact that Allenbrook now has a total of six centenarians!

Although the home has often cared for residents of over 100 years in the past, this is the first time there have been so many at once and, despite the many years of experience shared between Allenbrook staff within a wide range of Care Homes, none of them can recollect ever having such a high number of centenarians in the same home, at the same time.

Home Manager Ian Stott commented; “I have worked in the Care industry for over 20 years and have never known a Care Home to have more than three or four residents over 100 before. To have even two or three residents of this age is unusual, so six is really exceptional.”

Allenbrook’s six eldest residents have a total of 608 years between them and with a 105th birthday due later this month; everyone is looking forward to the next celebration.

Balls to Cancer - Exclusive Love Balls Charity Event

Three local companies joined forces to bring Dorset an exclusive evening of networking, dancing and entertainment, all in the name of charity.  The evening was a HUGE success and raised over £3,300 for Orchid, the male cancer charity that conducts research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancers in men.

tasty marketing, Creative Leadership and Families Facing Cancer spent months organising, planning and campaigning for the Love Balls event held on 19th February at AFC Bournemouth.

Local companies generously donated elegant spa days, overnight stays in sophisticated hotels and other prizes for the auction and raffle.  Guests were entertained by a fire manipulation artist on arrival, complimentary, relaxing massages and live music from talented musicians, Saxuality.  Everyone looked stunning in formal black tie attire. All decorations, games and goodie bags were ball themed to reinforce the serious message behind the evening.  The event certainly sparked interest within the local business community, some of the Love Balls committee even went networking in their football kits to raise awareness of the event!

Steve Mills was the entertaining compere for the evening, making witty jokes, encouraging auction bids and dancing the night away with guests.  It was even attended by Colin Osborne, founder of Orchid, who was accompanied by his wife.

“It’s great to see such a fantastic turnout for an event like this, all in aid of Orchid.  I’ve had cancer myself, which is what inspired me to set up Orchid, to encourage males to think about cancer and ensure they check themselves regularly.  The Love Balls event has been pivotal in highlighting the seriousness of cancer within males and raising awareness as well as vital funds.  My wife and I had a most enjoyable evening.”  Remarked Colin.

Emma James, Managing Director of tasty marketing commented, “It was great to see so many local businesses contributing to such a worthy charity.  We all had a truly excellent evening. A huge thank you to all who attended, donated prizes or sponsored and supported us.”

Ain’t no mountain high enough - Six dancers ascend mountain for charity

Six local dancers from Bournemouth pole dancing school, Pole Crazy, are climbing Mount Teide in Tenerife at the end of May to raise money for Whale Nation. Whale Nation is working in Sierra Leone to develop some of its most underprivileged areas.

The six dancers will be trekking up the volcano which, at nearly four thousand metres high, is two and a half times higher than Ben Nevis. All of the girls are excited about the trip, and since they regularly work out in the strenuous dance classes, they are ready to take on the challenge.

Whale Nation works to help Sierra Leone by using its strengths in nature and community- rich habitats, abundant and diverse nature, village life, crafts, art and music. Eco tourism, micro financing and social entrepreneurship, conservation, education, alternative and sustainability technologies and ideas, and organic farming methods are all being used as instruments of development, with implementation through teams of young volunteers from all over the world.

School principal, Lucinda Dawes, commented; “One of our teachers went to Tenerife in January and while she was there she spoke to a representative from Whale Nation about their plans for helping Sierra Leone. She was inspired to help as much as she could, so when she came back she rallied some of the students together.”

“The girls all work hard in their lessons, and have great core strength which will help them immensely when they climb the volcano!”

The girls climbing Mount Teide are Lucinda Dawes, Nichole Oldham, Isobel Storey, Sian Mizen, Emma Garrard, Jessica Weston and Linda Hamilton-Ross.

They are hoping to raise £1000, and anyone wanting to donate can by visiting the just giving page at www.justgiving.com/polecrazy

Like Rhapsody, it is set in lush woodland, close to the chic restaurants and designer shops in Canford Cliffs and the beaches around Poole harbour, making it ideal as a family home.

For those who want to get even closer to the sea, Britannia’s two eye catching waterfront properties, side by side, Sea Mew and Sea Wing, will be completed and on the market for viewing next month. Both detached three storey homes of cutting edge design have wonderful harbourside settings yet they’re located in the quiet and peaceful area of Evening Hill. What makes these properties extra special are the amazing panoramic views from every floor, looking out towards Poole Harbour and Brownsea Island. Like all Britannia homes, Sea Mew and Sea Wing have been designed with exceptional care and attention to detail with superb accommodation. The asking price for each is £4 million.

Greendale Construction Win’s Health and Safety Award

It’s another feather in the cap for Dorset’s premier class Construction Company as Greendale Construction of Poole scoops the prestigious Site Managers Health and Safety award.

“A safe site is often a profitable site which is in everyone’s best interest.” Those words from the Chairman of The Building Safety Group, Michael Setter, are the reason why it is such a significant award.

With over 55,000 site inspections carried out every year by the UK’s largest independent health and safety advisory group, there is fierce competition to win one of only seven awards and only the best site managers who maintain the highest standards of health and safety receive the accolade which is celebrating its tenth year. The award is considered an industry ‘Oscar’ for principal contractors and specialist trade contractors.

Greendale’s Roy Howarth is this year’s winner in the South Central Region. BSG Safety Advisors nominated Roy after visiting him at one of Greendale’s several sites under construction and a panel of distinguished judges singled him out for the award.

“It is great credit to Roy and the entire Greendale workforce that we’ve been honoured in this way” said Director Rob Hooker “The health and safety of our staff and the public is always our primary concern.”

BSG Chairman Michael Setter personally presented Roy Howarth with his award on Friday 9th April 2010. “It is a considerable achievement to be the recipient of one of these awards and I offer my warmest congratulations to each of the winners” said Michael.

Greendale is in a rich vein when it comes to honours this year. In January, Greendale became the first Construction Company in Dorset to achieve the silver award from ‘Investors In People’, recognising the company’s commitment to its employees, which in turn has led to increased performance and they were also fought off strong competition and were shortlisted in the top three for the Dorset Business KPMG Business of the Year Award.

Lewis-Manning Hospice has recently launched their Time to Care Appeal to raise £2.5 million to build a new state of the art 12 bedded in-patient unit in the existing hospice grounds and support the growth and development of existing services.  The new unit will provide planned and emergency respite care, as well as intensive rehabilitation and will be a choice for some towards the end of their life.  This all round care will be unique locally and all services will remain free of charge.

Greendale Construction set to start on £5.5m makeover of Dorset’s Durlston Castle

A Dorset-based contractor is set to begin work on a £5.5 million restoration of Grade II-listed Durlston Castle, the centrepiece of Durlston Country Park and National Nature Reserve near Swanage.

Dorset County Council, which owns and manages the park, has appointed Poole firm Greendale Construction Ltd as the main building contractor for the long-awaited ‘Durlston Project’. The renovation will bring the Victorian castle back into full public use as a world-class visitor centre at the eastern gateway to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site.

Work is scheduled to get underway on 19 April, with the castle due to re-open in summer 2011. It will then house the 280-acre park’s visitor services, gift shop and catering facilities. As well a wide range of exhibitions and displays based around the area’s world-renowned natural heritage, the rejuvenated castle will be fully equipped to host everything from conferences to weddings overlooking the Jurassic Coast.

Access to the castle will be prohibited for safety reasons during construction, except for pre-arranged site tours. The country park will remain open for business, except for a few path closures and diversions, with the visitor centre and café open between 10am and 5pm every day.

Work on the project to date has included detailed design by award-winning architects Long and Kentish. The aim of the project is to ensure the site retains its integral beauty, tranquillity and wildlife importance while completely restoring the parts the Victorian castle that have become rundown over the years.

Last summer, stone conservation specialists Sue and Lawrence Kelland, together with some dedicated volunteers, cleaned and repaired Durlston's famous Great Globe –made of 40 tones of Portland limestone – and its associated stone inscriptions.

As part of the project, artist Gary Breeze will create a ‘Timeline’ along the new zig-zag path to the castle, exploring geological time and change in relation to the Jurassic Coast, and ‘The Rock’, a one-ton, fossil-packed slab of Purbeck Stone illustrating the diversity of life in a Purbeck lake 120 million years ago, will be positioned within the castle.

More than half of the Durlston Project’s funding, £3.1m, has come from the Heritage Lottery Fund, with significant contributions from the Friends of Durlston, the county council, the South West RDA (Regional Development Agenc) and many other charitable trusts, organisations, businesses and individuals.

Dorset County Council countryside ranger service manager, Hamish Murray, said:

“After several years at the development stage it will be fantastic to finally see this exciting project taking shape on the ground and we are particularly pleased that Greendale Construction, a local firm, will be doing the work. The newly restored castle will be a great asset to the whole area and we look forward to a successful opening in 2011.”

Director of Greendale Construction Ltd, Robert Hooker, added:

“We are delighted to have been awarded this major contract. For us, this is the satisfactory culmination of many months of hard work. The Durlston Project is an interesting challenge involving both traditional and modern construction processes. We look forward to working in association with the design team and Dorset County Council to deliver a world class amenity for the local community and visitors to enjoy for many years to come.”

Spring Clean! - Steri 7 – A new generation of cleaner

Dorset-based Wardle Clean, who are distributors for Steri-7, the anti-bacterial cleaner, have found themselves in high demand after recent health scares have meant that businesses are more aware of the need for increased protection against harmful viruses and bacteria. One organisation that has made the change to Steri-7 is the diocese of Salisbury.

Members of the clergy have been issued with small hand dispensers of the anti-bacterial foam. Alison Comlay, TITE, commented on the decision to make Steri-7 available; “we wanted to offer a means of killing harmful bacteria when our clergy visit parishioners out in the field. We were introduced to Steri 7 last year, and since its introduction to the diocese, we have seen improved wellness in our staff.”

Rod Wardle, Director of Wardle Clean, commented; “Alcohol-based cleaners do kill bacteria, however once they've dried, the bacteria will return. Steri- 7 is an advanced biocidal cleaner that remains active even when dry. A single application kills micro-organisms in seconds and prevents further contamination for up to 7 days.”

With health and safety of the work force being at the fore of many employers concerns, a simple change in product can help to ward off illness and viruses. Wardle Clean are happy to talk to anyone about their Steri 7 products, so if you would like to know more, just call Rod on 01202 862424 or visit our stand at The Care Show in NIC Bournemouth 30th March & 31st March Stand SHS82 in the Solent Hall.

Buy a ticket for 20p for a chance to win 5 litres of Steri-7 Concentrated Biocidal cleaner (will make 200 bottles of 750ml diluted bottles) or 5 litres of Steri-7 Hand Sanitiser. All proceeds will be donated to one of our customers, Julia’s House, The Dorset Childrens Hospice.

Community Computers - Donating £2000 worth of thanks

After an emotional and determined fight against breast cancer, Gill Levett, a much loved and admired wife, friend and mother of three, passed away last year.

Gill received such priceless care and support from the staff at the Macmillian Unit at Christchurch Hospital; she chose to spend the last few days of her life there. She received regular visits from a palliative care sister which Gill, and her husband John, found so important, they wanted the opportunity to give something back to the unit and staff.

Instead of flowers at her funeral, Gill asked for donations to be made to the ‘Macmillian Caring Locally’ charity. Donations from Gill’s family and friends totalled over £2000. The money was put towards laptops for education projects and in particular, improving training for people involved in palliative care for patients in nursing homes in the community.

Recently, Gill’s husband John Levett and her three children, Emma James, Kirsty Lee and Nick James, visited the unit to present the laptops to Heather Rogers, Senior Clinical Leader, who is already putting them to good use training staff in the community.

LOCAL LEWIS-MANNING HOSPICE JOINS THE NATIONAL DYING MATTERS COALITION

Lewis-Manning Hospice in Lilliput Poole, has joined in the national Dying Matters Coalition to help to promote public awareness around dying, death, and bereavement ahead of next week’s National ‘Dying Matters Week’.

Although around 70% of people express the wish that they would prefer to die at home, in reality approximately 60% of people die in hospital. Many of us have specific wishes about how we would like to die, or what we would like to happen after our death, but less than a third of people have discussed their wishes and only 4% have documented their wishes in an advanced care plan.

Knowing loved ones have died where they wanted to be and had the funeral they would have wished can bring enormous comfort to those left behind, which is why as a society we need to talk more about dying, death and bereavement, and as individuals, we need to have a conversation about our wishes with our family, friends and loved ones – whatever our age and state of health.

The Dying Matters Coalition has been set up by the National Council for Palliative Care (NCPC), to raise awareness and provide the support and information needed to have these conversations with loved ones. It aims to help make dying well a natural part of a good life and through this help change attitudes and behaviours towards dying, death and bereavement as well as raising the profile and improving end of life care.

Hilary Fisher, Director of the Dying Matters Coalition, said: “For too long issues of death, dying and bereavement have been seen as too difficult and frightening to talk about, but talking about death doesn’t bring it closer. Starting the conversation is never easy but if one person raises it honestly and openly, it gives others the chance to start having their say about their own death too.”

Dying Matters Week is 15-21 March. For more information, and to get involved in upcoming discussions and events, visit www.dyingmatters.org.

It may be a potty idea but it’s putting more and more little bums on seats! - My Carry Potty, invented and designed by a Dorset Mum, is fast becoming a ‘must have’ for parents with toddlers.

The invention was born out of personal experience:

Mother of three Amanda Jenner used to carry her eldest son’s potty in a carrier bag everywhere just in case he was caught short – not particularly elegant or hygienic!

One day, little George needed to do his business in a busy High Street and the disapproving looks Amanda received when she disposed of the contents down the nearest drain convinced her there must be a better way!

Amanda invented and designed ‘My Carry Potty’ which looks more like a kiddie’s lunch box than a loo! It comes in a variety of bright colours with a big carry handle to appeal to toddlers.

The potty is made from high quality plastic and is easy to keep clean.  It’s assembly free, doesn’t need liners or bags and has a clip shut lid with a unique seal which is completely leak and odour proof so ‘number ones’ and ‘number twos’ can be got rid of conveniently later.

Toddlers love to sit on their “funky” throne and many parents have contacted Amanda saying potty training has become so much easier thanks to her portable invention.  Her own youngest child, two year old Olivia, takes her potty everywhere – in cars, planes, trains, even in the Royal Albert Hall!

35 year old Amanda is a mum with a mission. She managed to negotiate an exclusive launch of My Carry Potty in John Lewis stores as well as securing a European distributor. Next month, the portable potty will be on sale throughout major UK stores – not bad for a mum who developed her product from scratch!

A recent interview Amanda gave on BBC Radio 2 Simon Mayo’s show resulted in a major boost in sales and enquiries – she’s become something of a potty training guru!

Greendale Construction’s special silver award - Dorset’s Greendale Construction Stand Tall and Proud as one of the few companies in the United Kingdom (and the only Construction Company in Dorset) to be awarded Silver standard by Investors in People.

Greendale Construction based in Poole, Dorset, is celebrating another major achievement, as they have been awarded Silver standard in recognition of the investment the company makes into its employees which in turn has led to increased performance.

Supported by the government’s Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, Investors in People puts companies through a rigorous assessment process before issuing its awards. The Investors in People standard, is the foundation of good management and was first issued to Greendale six years ago and the firm proudly displays the Investors In People plaque and logo at their head office, now as they enter 2010 they have been upgraded to Silver.

The bronze, silver and gold standards were introduced last May (2010) for high achieving companies and at the first attempt, Greendale passed and went to Investors in People Silver standard with flying colours.

The quality assessor for Investors in People interviewed a diverse cross section of the Greendale team from directors and site managers to trainees and administration workers. The company’s training programme, apprenticeship schemes, business and development plans were also put under close scrutiny and Greendale had to meet an additional 76 evidence requirements from across the framework of its business to gain the silver award.

Human Resources Manager for Greendale, Maria Seabright says, “The company are extremely proud to be one of the chosen few awarded an Investors in People Silver standard this year, and it is without a doubt an amazing achievement for the company. The directors and I know that without the loyalty, hard work and dedication from each and everyone of the Greendale team this award would not be possible. Our team and our approach to business is what helps us to stand out from our competitors and that’s why we were selected for the Silver standard by Investors in People.”

Maria goes onto say, “Greendale prides itself on encouraging employees to gain qualifications in their different fields of work and to take promotion within the company, the company are also a founder member of the CIOB Chartered Building Company scheme which commits the company to quality of service, integrity of conduct and client focus providing professionalism throughout, from initial enquiry to satisfactory completion of the project.”

With a strong order book for the year ahead, as well as a recent finalist in the KPMG Company of the Year with Dorset Business  and the Investors in People Silver standard now under their belt, Greendale Construction is flying the flag for Dorset businesses and are without a doubt helping to buck the trend of the economic downturn.

Bournemouth-based Serenity Beauty Events is accommodating working mothers as a result of the credit crunch and rising costs of living.  Many mothers have returned to work in order to support their families. This results in a lot less relaxation and pampering time for working mums.  In order to combat this, Serenity Beauty Events is offering females the chance to have beauty treatments in the comfort of their own home.

Time off has become a luxury, and working women can now book treatments such as manicures, waxing, massages, professional tanning and reflexology and have them performed in the comfort of their own home, at a time which is convenient to them.  The talented therapists can also be hired for any event as well as pamper parties.

Jessica Godfrey of Serenity Beauty Events commented; “This new spa experience means that working women with hectic schedules won’t have to find childcare as we come to them, and treatments can be booked around their working life such as in the evenings, or weekends, when perhaps a beauty salon wouldn’t be open.  Pamper parties can also be arranged for women who wish to enjoy the pamper experience with friends.”

Serenity Beauty Events is offering new clients an introductory discount of 50% off their first treatment and 25% off their first pamper party.  They are also set to launch their exciting new Sunseeker Pamper session this summer where beauty treatments are taking place on a Sunseeker boat.  Guests will cruise around Sandbanks and absorb the picturesque coastline from the comfort of a state of the art yacht.  For more information please visit www.serenitybeautyevents.co.uk or call Jessica on 07772 037 994.

An award close to Tara’s heart is ‘Business Mother of the Year’ sponsored by the Daily Echo. Mark Pitcher, Director of CG Pitcher and Son, commented; “Holwell Nursery is a “not for profit” charity which provides an extremely important resource for the North Dorset community.  It is important to help the community in which we live, in whatever way we can.  We heard about Holwell Nursery through one of our clients and felt it was such a deserving charity.  We’re working on their premises to improve the facilities, allowing for more children to attend, meaning their parents can get back into work.”

Summit Special - Climbing Everest for Charity

Two friends are scheduled to climb Mount Everest in memory of their friend and comrade, John Thornton, a Royal Marines Officer who was tragically killed in Afghanistan 18 months ago.  Matt Snook and Pete Sunnucks are scheduled to climb the risky North Ridge in May 2010 and aim to raise £100,000, to be split between two charities, Help for Heroes and the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation.

200 British climbers have successfully ascended Mount Everest, and of these, 85 have triumphantly completed the most difficult route of the North Ridge.  The climb is highly demanding and dangerous, as 212 people have died taking on the challenge in the past.   High attitudes and difficult weather conditions will inhibit the climb, however Matt and Pete are determined to sharpen their skills before taking on the risky challenge.

Matt, a Royal Marine from Bournemouth and his friend Pete, have spent the last few months in training and building up experience for the big climb.  They’ve climbed in The Alps, English Lakes and the Scottish Highlands, and have specialist endurance tasks ahead of them.  Next week, the two young men are climbing the Southern Hemisphere’s highest peak, Mount Aconcagua in South America, as practise for the marathon climb in five months time.

Matt Snook commented; “Many of our friends are serving in the Armed Forces, some of whom are deployed in Afghanistan, some are preparing to deploy and others have recently returned home.  We want to raise money for Help for Heroes, to aid those who have suffered horrific injuries in the line of duty. We are also fundraising for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation, which was founded in memory of our dear friend who we tragically lost.  The Foundation has one simple objective; to encourage and assist young people to live their dreams.”

The JTYA Foundation provides scholarships and bursaries for training and personal development and was set up in memory of John Thornton, who died aged 22, in Afghanistan.

If you would like to contribute to either of the two worthy charities and support Matt and Pete in their forthcoming challenge, no matter how large or small the donation, please visit www.justgiving.co.uk/everestforheroes.  They are currently looking for 10 companies to donate £2,000 each to sponsor the climb.

All Change for Charity - FRIENDS OF FOREST HOLME logo redesigned by BOURNEMOUTH students

Poole-based charity, Friends of Forest Holme, has undergone an exciting new rebrand.  Three students at the Arts University College Bournemouth, designed a stylish and contemporary logo for the local charity as part of a college project over the summer months.  An award ceremony took place last week where the students creative talents were recognised and thanked by the Friends of Forest Holme committee.

The first year Visual Communication students at the Arts University College Bournemouth were required to complete a ‘live’ brief as part of the course. Students were asked to choose from various options including a brief to design a new, contemporary logo for local Poole charity, Friends of Forest Holme.

Friends of Forest Holme is a registered charity supporting Forest Holme, the Specialist Palliative Care Unit at Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.  It was decided that the charity had outgrown their existing logo and required a rebrand.  As Friends of Forest Holme is a charity, Debra Dennett, Fundraising Manager for Friends of Forest Holme, submitted a brief to the students requiring a contemporary and stylish new logo.

Debra commented; “The transformation of our logo has been welcomed by the trustees, staff and patients alike as it has really freshened up our look.   We cannot thank the students enough for their inventive ideas and dedication to providing us with a wonderful new logo.”

The new logo is a maroon red with an image of a tree which was chosen to represent strength and growth.  This is an excellent example of how local businesses can benefit from the skills of budding young designers.

“It was an honour to work with Forest Holme, we all really enjoyed the project and feel that we’ve have learnt a great deal from the experience. This has been so rewarding, I would encourage other students to use their new skills for other valuable causes” - Ben Huntley (19)

Matthew Desmier, Head of Enterprise at the Arts University College Bournemouth remarked:  “Working on projects such as this is a really great opportunity for the students of the Arts University College at Bournemouth.  It not only gives them real world experience and makes their studies even more real, but it’s always a pleasure to work with a cause as worthy as Friends of Forest Holme”

If you would like more information on supporting the Friends of Forest Holme charity, please visit the website: www.friendsofforestholme.org.uk or call 01202 670644.

Alchemy Health Clinic celebrates 28 years in business -
New born babes to centenarians, the Alchemy Health Clinic in Dorset has taken the natural approach for 28 years.

Dr. Nashir Karmali was born in Uganda, East Africa and came to  the UK as a refugee during turbulent times following the coup in Uganda. He was amongst  80,000 Asians who had to flee the country. He and his parents arrived in Dorset on a bitterly cold November day. In order to support his aged parents, Nashir soon found employment; several years of personal unrest followed until he finally realised what he wanted to do in life….After graduating from the Anglo European College of Chiropractic (AECC), Bournemouth in 1982, he founded the The Alchemy Health Clinic in Wimborne.

Soon after graduating from the AECC, Nashir’s first son was born. “I realised the need to broaden my depth of knowledge to provide natural healthcare for the family and chose to go on and also study Cranial Sacral Therapy and Homeopathy. I am fortunate to have studied under some of the worlds most renowned and revered teachers in both these disciplines; they have helped me understand the deeper qualities of health and illnesses and the processes that one may have to go through in rediscovering health. I feel it is the birth right and responsibility of every human being to maintain an optimum level of health.”

He goes onto say, “ I believe that Health is not merely an absence of disease but rather a state of harmony within oneself at every level: physically, psychologically, emotionally and spiritually. Our first obligation as practitioners is to listen to our patients and endeavour to feel what they are feeling, and attempt to understand the cause of their illness and offer treatment that is safe, gentle and provides a rapid restoration of health. In addition to this, we offer advice that will aid the discovery of an optimum level of health and maintain it.
I treat every one who attends my clinic as if they were part of my family and want to give them my utmost care. “

Alchemy ‘s unique team of highly qualified and experienced practitioners and teachers work closely together, to provide what is best for the patient.

“We offer safe and natural healthcare. In cases which are complicated and need further examination, such as X-Rays, MRIs or laboratory tests, Alchemy can arrange these privately without delay; they also work closely with the patient's doctor, informing   them of their  findings and requesting  appropriate examinations.  If surgery is indicated, we offer advice and support for pre and post operative care, thus aiding a speedy recovery, states Nashir”.

Dr Karmali is not at all opposed to conventional medicine, on the contrary, he works closely with local doctors, consultants and practitioners of alternative and complementary medicine. He often observes surgical procedures, widening his understanding and keeping abreast with the latest advances in surgery.

“Every aspect of our healthcare system has a place and it is only by working together, without prejudice and with humility that we can offer all patients the best healthcare possible” says Nashir.

Alchemy also works with local businesses, advising them on the ergonomics of specific working environments, offering chiropractic examination to new, existing employees and managerial staff together with CEOs, to prevent and minimise absenteeism in the work place, in this area, prevention being better than cure….Thus minimising the loss of working days and loss of business.

Alchemy also sees that a similar niche can also be woven by working with local schools and colleges, advising students, staff and parents on the importance of good back care and with the view to pre-empt back problems developing from a young age.

There are many aspects of the clinic which make it a unique and unusual sanctuary, the various treatments offered are:-Chiropractic, Homeopathy, Oriental medicine (which includes acupuncture and Chinese Herbal medicine), Cranial Sacral Therapy, Counselling and Hypnotherapy. These treatments are supported by diverse classes which include Pilates, Yoga, Personal Fitness and Vegetarian Cookery.

Nashir still works from the same building where the clinic started in the front room of his family home 28 years ago; now the whole property has been extended and converted into a clinic which includes four treatment rooms, three of which overlook the beautiful garden created by Nashir.

Nashir continues: “My team and I are celebrating 28 years working in the Dorset community, as part of the celebrations this year we are hosting an Open Day at the clinic on Wednesday 27th January 2010 from 9am to 6pm, mini treatments, talks and classes will be on offer free of charge throughout the day so if you would like to  experience any of the treatments or classes that Alchemy offers call 01202 880136  and the reception team will book your complementary appointment for you.”

Hi-5 for Archway Computer Training - Local company celebrate 5th Birthday

This year Dorset-based Archway Computer Training is celebrating its 5th birthday.  Directors Carol Cox and Debbie Phipps have grown the business into the successful training company it is today through determination and ambition to succeed. This success is due to Carol and Debbie working with their clients to identify needs and create bespoke training packages.  They have improved the IT skills of staff at renowned local companies, such as Flight Refuelling, Tasty Marketing and East Dorset District Council.

Due to the current economic climate, it has been suggested that companies train their existing staff to the highest standards, rather than taking on a new employee.  This eliminates the cost for another member of staff, and at the same time making a workforce much more productive and efficient.  As good computer skills are essential in the workplace, it is important for all employees to have a sound understanding of most of the Microsoft Office programs. Perhaps this is why Archway Computer Training has seen a significant increase in new enquiries over the last few months.

Director Carol Cox commented; “We’ve worked with a variety of companies across the county and delight in sharing our knowledge of IT with other local businesses.”

Carol’s business partner, Debbie Phipps commented; “The past 5 years have flown by since Carol and I set up Archway Computer Training.  We’d like to thank all of our clients past and present.  Here’s hoping for another successful 5 years!”

Archway Computer Training covers all aspects of training from beginners to advanced levels.  Whether you need to excel in Excel or design the perfect PowerPoint presentation to ‘wow’ your clients, then Archway Computer Training can help you.  Sessions are covered on a one-to-one and group basis to ensure complete understanding of the various packages available.  For more information please visit www.archwayct.co.uk or call 01202 632858 or 01202 875867.

Britannia Properties of Poole, provider of luxury homes for the rich and famous, backs local AUCB student destined to become a leading fashion and lifestyle photographer.

Student Ginny Marsh, studying for a BA degree in commercial photography at the Arts University College at Bournemouth, was looking for the ultimate luxury setting for her finals shoot. She needed a modern, contemporary and luxurious home to perfectly complement the theme of her fashion editorial - 1950’s style retro lingerie made famous by Marilyn Monroe and other Hollywood stars of the time.

Ginny first found a perfect pin-up model with a striking resemblance to the legendary leading lady in ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’. But finding the right location for such a glamorous photo shoot wasn’t so easy.

Her course leader at Bournemouth, Conrad Tracy, recommended she try Britannia Properties Group which has an unrivalled reputation for luxury homes in the millionaire’s playground of Sandbanks, Branksome Park and Canford Cliffs.

Ginny wrote to Managing Director Michael Howard but was sceptical of even getting a reply. “I thought to myself, what the heck, if you don’t aim high you never get anywhere in life” said Ginny.

Far from ignoring the request, Michael himself a keen photographer took great interest in Ginny’s proposal as he was impressed by the lavishness and quality of her work which also complement the ethos of Britannia Properties. Ginny currently works with photographer Philip Nash – a triple winner as Best Wedding Photographer and nominated in 2008 and 2009 as Fashion and Beauty photographer of the year.

“Ginny has great potential to be a star photographer” say Michael “I was more than happy to allow her to use one of our exceptional homes in Branksome Park as a studio free of charge as I felt the backdrop of our property would compliment her work”.

“The end results were stunning says Ginny, who went onto say, “The photos portray a day in the life of an ordinary woman who owns a luxurious, modern and contemporary home and who loves her underwear so much she doesn’t want to put on any other clothes. Having the opportunity to showcase my work within one of the Britannia Properties was like a dream come true for me and in my opinion, any woman, from any walk of life, can imagine herself feeling special in just her lingerie in a home like this and perhaps Grazia, Scarlett or another high profile magazine might just say yes to the photos.”

Developing the business name and brand needed a move from 'Pure and Simple'  over to the '123' brand - tying in neatly with the range of services offered.  Offering a range of web, online marketing and IT support for small businesses, 123 Web love to give their clients the best service, with the minimum of geek-speak.  Keeping it simple and easy to understand is good for our clients, and good for us.

Darren Roberts says: "It's really exciting to get the new business off the ground and running and we're looking forward to giving our clients a great service."

123 Web Design Bournemouth will be offering a one hour free consultancy to local businesses as part of the launch celebration.  Contact 01202 394409 / 07734 069480  with any queries, or visit www.123itsupport.co.uk - local businesses are free to use the time as they please - advice about websites or any IT problems are included.
