Cricket legend Blowers is good sport at lunch

Former cricket commentator Henry Blofeld bowled guests over at the Dorset Sporting Club’s autumn lunch in Sandbanks, Poole.

The popular journalist and broadcaster – nicknamed ‘Blowers’ – was guest speaker at the event at Rick Stein’s restaurant sponsored by regional law firm Ellis Jones Solicitors and supported by Julius Baer International Limited.

He regaled diners with a colourful account of his life inside and outside of the commentary box as well as his views about the way cricket has changed today.

Nigel Smith, Ellis Jones Managing Partner, said: “Blowers was on top form with his customary wit and endless assortment of amusing stories and anecdotes.

“He proved as entertaining as ever in front of a microphone during his after-dinner speech, which was the perfect way to round-off an excellent event.

“It was the first sporting luncheon for some time because of the pandemic so it was wonderful to see so many people in attendance.

“It was an absolute pleasure to welcome Blowers to Dorset and for Ellis Jones to be able to sponsor the luncheon supported by Julius Baer International Limited.”

Nigel added: “Ellis Jones is a strong supporter of local clubs and teams, and this was a day to remember for the local sporting community.”

Now retired, old Etonian Blowers is best known for his eccentric and charismatic commentary on Test Match Special on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra.

Author Ian Fleming was friends with Blowers’ father and used his surname as the inspiration for one of the most famous Bond villains, Ernst Stavro Blofeld.

The Dorset Sporting Club lunch was organised by England rugby legend David Duckham MBE.

Ellis Jones sponsors a number of local sports teams, including Wimborne’s cricket and football clubs and the Bournemouth-based Oakmeadians rugby team.

It has more than 160 staff including 19 partners in five offices across the south coast as well as London.
