Easier access to play sessions for SEN families

Project My Time, part of the Short Breaks services provided by Diverse Abilities, is now open for families in Poole to self-refer.

Previously, families in Poole could only access the service through social worker referral, however, the new change brings the service in line with processes used for families in Bournemouth, Christchurch, and the wider Dorset area.

Clare Rochford, Children’s Team manager of Short Breaks, commented: “This is a real step forward in making our services easier to access for the families who need us most. We’re really pleased with this agreement from BCP Council and can’t wait to meet lots of new children and young adults in the upcoming school holidays.”

Project My Time provides holiday activities for children and young people aged eight to 18 diagnosed with a disability. Parents do not need to stay at the play sessions as all teams are trained to work with learning disabilities. Sessions take place in the school holidays across Dorset and are generally three hours long. Activities include sensory play, beach walks, cinema sessions, baking, arts and crafts, physical exercise, and day trips.

Throughout sessions children receive one to one support by a member of staff, and throughout the COVID pandemic these staff bubbles are allocated and monitored to minimise any risk of transmission for both families and staff.

The charity asks for an £8 contribution per session to help cover activities and support. Dorset and BCP councils have some funding for a limited number of spaces if required. Activity booking forms are circulated to parents prior to the school holiday.
