Lighthouse shows hit the spot at half term

Theatre can play a crucial role in developing empathy – allowing children to step into the shoes of others.

 

That’s according to research carried out by the University of Cambridge that suggests that while play helps children understand how to communicate, cooperate, and navigate relationships, watching performances on stage or on screen can show children how different characters experience challenges. 

 

With a diverse range of shows aimed at early years audiences – and their grown-ups – Lighthouse is conscious that for nearly 50 years many young people’s first encounters with live entertainment have been in its venues, which is why at least 20% of the programme is aimed at young people.

 

And with the half term break coming up at the end of the month, there are three shows that younger audiences are sure to enjoy:

 

Shlomo’s Beatbox Adventure for Kids

Saturday 24 May, Sherling Studio

A very welcome return for the five-star, has to be seen to be believed, world record-breaking beatboxer Shlomo. He makes music with nothing but his mouth and a mic and he’ll teach you how to do the same. A genuine sonic superhero. Suitable for all ages.

BAFTA- and Oscar-nominated animated story about Cat, a solitary animal whose home is devastated by a great flood. Finding refuge on a boat populated by various species, Cat has to team up with them despite their differences.

 

A Squash and a Squeeze

Tuesday 27, Wednesday 28, Thursday 29 May, Theatre
This heartwarming and hilarious adventure, based on the book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, is full of beautiful puppets and enchanting songs. Adapted for the stage by Olivier-nominated duo Barb Jungr and Samantha Lane. Age guidance: 3-8
