Passenger employees pledge to go the extra mile for National Walking Month

Staff at Bournemouth-based public transport app and website provider, Passenger will be lacing up for a 4,000km trek in May to promote National Walking Month.

17 staff members will collectively walk more than 350 miles per week for seven weeks as part of ‘The Pacific Crest Trail Virtual Challenge’, an initiative run by The Conqueror Challenges. The 2,485-mile trek equates to the same distance of a hiking trail across the highest portion of the Cascade and Sierra Nevada Mountain ranges.

As part of the challenge, Passenger will contribute more than £500 to The Conqueror Challenges, which will go towards sustainable initiatives such as tree planting and plastic pollution prevention. To date, The Conqueror Challenges has planted more than 5.5m trees and helped stop more than 4.5m plastic bottles from entering the ocean, in collaboration with Plastic Bank.

Katie Killinger, Head of People at Passenger commented: “This year marks our most challenging staff sustainability initative yet and we can’t wait to get started. Every member of our team genuinely supports Passenger’s purpose and long-term goal to accelerate the UK’s journey towards shared, sustainable transport. Taking part in collaborative activities like our National Walking Month challenge is a great way to support causes we believe in, while motivating the team as we’re all in it together.”

Passenger’s latest pledge follows many initiatives previously undertaken by the team, including the ‘Route 66 Virtual Challenge’, which saw employees walk, run and cycle 2,280 over the winter. Passenger also continually supports Living Streets’ ongoing ‘Walk To School Week’ initiative and ‘#Try20’ summer challenge, which promotes adding 20 minutes of walking to everyday lives.

Katie continues: “We believe that anything encouraging our staff to follow a healthy lifestyle is a positive investment, so we subsidise wearable technology to support staff’s exercise activities – both inside and outside of work. Businesses who talk the talk should walk the walk, and knowing our team are behind us every step of the way in our mission is invigorating – together, we can inspire positive change.”
