POOLE BRITANNIA - An Exhibition, Celebration Day and bank holiday fun

It’s time to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee! The Power House - Poole invites the community and visitors to come together, create and celebrate Her Majesty’s glorious 70-year reign and engage with local artists. The project has been funded by Arts Council England through Dorset Community Foundation, with a contribution from BCP Council. We are looking for local businesses who may be interested in funding some elements of the project including a memorabilia brochure.

Join in with a Pop-up on Friday 3 June in the Gather Hub, Dolphin Centre Poole, and on Saturday 4 June it’s in the High Street near Orchard Plaza as part of Poole Town’s Jubilee Celebration. Creative activities include ‘Make your own Ceramic Jubilee Memorabilia’ with Creative Clay and ‘Write a Letter to the Queen’ and post it in Poole BID’s special Jubilee letterbox in the Dolphin Centre.

Further interactive and creative arts activities are planned for Saturday 25 June starting with a Celebration Day for families, to mark the opening of an exciting ‘Poole Britannia! Exhibition at Lighthouse, Poole. Be there and make this a day to remember.

On the day participate in a ‘Mass’d Sing’ with Ali Sharpe to record her Jubilee Song and enjoy The Federation of Hamworthy Primary Schools pupils perform in their Creative Writing Open Mic and their drama with a film produced from their Drama Workshop - all facilitated by CoCreate Dorset.

The ‘Poole Britannia!’ Exhibition in the gallery displays a glorious culmination of new legacy artworks created by six Poole schools, commissioned by The Power House in association with Lighthouse. Discover when the Queen visited Poole and share your memories to be included as well. The exhibition continues through to 24 July.

These installations include seven Mosaic Plaques created by 204 pupils and staff from the Federation of Hamworthy Primary Schools working with Bristol’s David Bowers. Inspired by 29 pupils’ shortlisted designs each mosaic celebrates a decade of Her Majesty’s reign. Headteacher Susannah Hill says,

"We are absolutely delighted to begin to see our plans for celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee reveal themselves. Over the past few months, we have been working in partnership with The Power House - Poole to develop a wide range of events and experiences that will not only celebrate the Jubilee but bring our local communities in Poole together. At the end of our school project, the children are very excited that a cross section of their work will be displayed for a month at Lighthouse, Poole, from the end of June, as this really does validate their beautiful work. We hope that the Platinum Jubilee celebrations will be remembered by the children for many years to come and we would like to thank everyone involved for making this possible - especially the Power House for securing the funding bid to enable this to happen."

Longfleet Primary School pupils have sculpted five exquisite Platinum Jubilee Globes. Led by The Clayshack the pupils were treated to a visit by Former Poole Pottery Master Potter, Eddie Goodall, and Paintress Josephine Winzar who joined in, and chatted to the children about making pottery fit for a Queen.

A Mosaic Portrait of the Queen is underway with art students from Cornerstone Academy, Lytchett Minster School, and St Edward’s School. Amanda Waite, a local artist is using their abstract designs produced through learning new arts techniques. Claire Austin and Maureen La Frenais assisted with the workshops and creative process.

Photos of creative pieces produced by the community and from all The Power House Jubilee events will be sent as part of their Platinum Jubilee Gift to Her Majesty, and if you have a photo you have taken of the Queen, you are invited to share it with The Power House to create a memento to be included in their gift.

Truly a community wide celebration of local talent, while offering creative opportunities and inviting community connection to commemorate this once in a lifetime moment.
