Writer’s Lighthouse commission is a play for our pandemic times

Exploring the lives, hopes and dreams of young people in Poole, acclaimed writer Andrew Muir’s new play will provide a snapshot of the struggles they have faced living with the extraordinary pressures of the coronavirus pandemic.

Commissioned by Lighthouse, Poole’s centre for the arts, as part of Here and Now, a project that has seen 40 arts centres across England create new works that tell the stories of their communities, Andrew has been running writing workshops with young people.

The play, which will be inspired by these workshops, will be directed by Janisè Sadik, of Young Vic Directors and Paines Plough, and performed in Hamworthy Park in June by three of the young participants.

“This is a really exciting project and Lighthouse is delighted to be working with Andrew Muir and Janisè Sadik as part of Here and Now,” says Creative Engagement Officer Perdie Bargh who is producing the play for Lighthouse.

“Many of those who have taken part are from less privileged backgrounds and a key element of the project aims to unlock their creative talents and open up new horizons for them by giving them the opportunity to work alongside a professional playwright.”

Here and Now is supported by Arts Council England and Future Arts Centres, marking The National Lottery’s 25th birthday.

Andrew Muir’s works for stage and screen include The Session (Mother Tongue/Soho Theatre) and Gold Dust (Deafinitely Theatre/Soho Theatre) and the short film A Family Man. He was the Literary Associate for Deafinitely Theatre for which he adapted Love’s Labour's Lost at Shakespeare’s Globe.

Janisè Sadik is a part of the Young Vic Directors programme and Paines Plough. In 2018 she set up a Youth Theatre company at We Are Spotlight working with young actors that don’t have access to training.
