YMCA Bournemouth unveils major plans to reinvigorate Westover Road site

YMCA Bournemouth has submitted proposals to BCP Council to revitalise Delta House, its established Westover Road site, replacing the existing building with new, high-quality temporary accommodation and public amenities.

Plans involve the refurbishment and repurposing of the site into 117 temporary homes, supporting offices, a public gym and café. The building’s frontage would also be rejuvenated, with a replacement façade installed to help uplift the surrounding area.

Gareth Sherwood, CEO of YMCA Bournemouth commented: “Delta House has played a staple role within the Bournemouth community for over 90 years as a base for our diverse range of services. As demand for our services has grown extensively over time, the building has given so much and is in need of modernisation.

“Our proposals aim to give the building a new lease of life, reflecting and celebrating our legacy as a well-respected Bournemouth charity. This is a long-term investment for YMCA Bournemouth, giving us the ability to serve our community for many years to come.”

YMCA Bournemouth’s proposals come following recent figures by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities which show that more than 300 households in Dorset are threatened with homelessness.

Gareth Sherwood continued: “We’ve supported and housed more than 170 individuals over the past year alone, and demand for our services is increasing as the cost-of-living crisis mounts pressure on people.

“Ultimately, our aim is to create safe, comfortable spaces in which people can rebuild their independence. We do more than simply provide a temporary home for those in need – we equip them with the essential skills and confidence they need to move on to a brighter future.

“By reinvigorating Delta House and improving our existing facilities, we can unlock this future for more people in our community and help Dorset tackle homelessness in the long-term.”

Proposed works include the relocation of Delta House’s existing temporary accommodation entrance to Hinton Road, allowing easy access to a new public use gym and fitness suites directly from Westover Road.

Works would take a sympathetic and sustainable design approach, with the building’s front block retained and repurposed to preserve and enhance its 1930s Art Deco features.

Gareth Sherwood added: “Our proposals follow carefully considered designs with quality and longevity in mind. We want to contribute positively to the street scene at Westover Road, while offering a welcoming space for our wider community, as well as those in need of our services.”
