Award-winning podcast sniffs out The Pig’s family secrets

The renowned Hutson hotelier family behind The Pig join the award-winning podcast It Runs In The Family to share how they bring home the bacon by combining their talents in their Home Grown Hotels family business.

Recently awarded an OBE for services to the hospitality industry and philanthropy, Robin Hutson opened his first hotel in 1994, closely followed by the Hotel du Vin chain. Robin has been using wife Judy’s influential eye for interior design in his hotels for the past 27 years. Their son Ollie has taken the helm as Head Kitchen Gardener at their latest family business endeavour, The Pig.

Podcast host, Liz Willingham, says: “Widely regarded as one of the hotel industry’s most influential family hotel chains, the profound effect Robin Hutson has had on the hospitality industry has earned him an OBE in 2022’s New Year’s Honours.

“We are honoured to have this opportunity to chat with these hospitality giants and witness the generational interplay between family members and colleagues. It’s interesting to see the question of ‘Who’s the boss?’ come up time and time again in family business podcast discussions.”

In episode 37, the trio reveal their approach to viewing the team as a huge extended family, how they come together in times of hardship and retain their family values through any business structure.

Podcast co-host Leila Willingham adds: “In this episode, the Hutson family touch upon ‘the push and pull’ experienced by children of family business owners and the desire to carve out a path for themselves. A subject that I am no stranger to as the daughter of a family business owner myself. Ollie also reveals his own intriguing approach to family communications within the business.”

This episode covers:

● Robin’s illustrious hotelier history, from Hotel du Vin to The Pig hotel chain

● How Ollie observed and learned from so much of his parents’ business acumen through formative years

● The huge cultural impact of Judy’s hotel designs throughout their chains

● Upholding the family values through a future involving the introduction of private equity

● Celebrity anecdotes from their history, involving the likes of David Bowie, Angela Hartnett and Mark Nix
